Choosing a grade
Three questions decide the grade
Every product below starts from the same closed-cell cross-linked polyethylene and is then tuned to a duty, which is why this catalogue of XPE foam products and XLPE foam products is organised by what the foam has to do rather than by product name.
Thickness
How thin does it have to be?
This decides the manufacturing route before anything else does. Chemically cross-linked XPE runs 2 to 12 mm in a single layer and laminates up to 100 mm. Electron-beam cross-linked IXPE starts at 0.15 mm, with a finer cell and tighter thickness tolerance, which is what thin gaskets and precision die-cut parts need.
Temperature and fire
What standard are you held to?
Service window runs from -40 °C to +120 °C across the range, but the grades carrying BS 476 Part 7 Class 1 for surface spread of flame and BS 476 Part 6 Class O for fire propagation are a subset of it. If your specification names a fire rating, say so at enquiry and we will quote from that subset rather than the full catalogue.
Facing
Where will it actually sit?
Bare foam is right for concealed duct and pipe runs. Aluminium foil belongs anywhere radiant heat or vapour drive is the real problem, which on a metal roof is most of the load. A UV barrier film is for anything left exposed outdoors. The facing is chosen by the location, not by the foam.
